After having to back out of competing at the Ironman World Championships in Kona due to a nagging hamstring injury and not getting a clear answer from my doctors and physical therapists, through strength and conditioning I healed, relearned what it meant to be an athlete, and came back stronger than ever before.
Seeing how all the athletes and coaches that are part of the sport and the CrossFit community have contributed to the growth inspires me every day to continue to push forward and help define how future generations will experience this approach to fitness and lifestyle.
Every time you sit down on a chair, you perform a pull from your legs. But because the chair is stable, is high up, and has a backrest, you don’t usually pull yourself into the chair with control; you just drop. This convenience has led to underdevelopment in our ability to pull from our lower extremities, which causes extension at the lumbar spine and a subsequent loss of motor control, which is expressed as a loss of movement control.
The pursuit of wellness is a journey without destination. It requires patience and perseverance. There is no ‘finish line.’ As humans, we live in a state of constant adaptation. As we evolve our needs and desires change. Similar to fitness, wellness requires training.
The development of these functions as seen in CrossFit, or any methodology that cares about developing such abilities, can be attributed to the king of all movements – The Squat.
